CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWDOWN AT CASTROL EDGE WINTERNATIONALS
![]() The Castrol EDGE Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway (June 10-13) are shaping up as a ANDRA Pro Series barn-burner after Sydney’s penultimate championship round at the weekend saw a number of the title fights set to come right down to the wire. The title chases for Top Fuel, Top Doorslammer and Pro Stock are all very much undecided heading into the Queen’s Birthday long weekend event, which will take place at the Ipswich quarter-mile over four days, Thursday – Sunday. Martin Stamatis, Phil Read and Phil Lamattina are fighting it out in a red-hot rivalry for the flame-throwing Top Fuel title, while West Australian Robin Judd is hoping to secure his maiden crown in Top Doorslammer while defending Champ and fellow West Aussie John Zappia and Sydney winner Maurice Fabietti hope to stop him. In Pro Stock, which enjoyed a 16 car field at Willowbank Raceway in April and also at the weekend, defending dual Champion Aaron Tremayne took back his place at the top of the standings and will be fighting to stay there with Lee Bektash, Aaron’s brother Tyronne and John Barbagallo all looking to see that he doesn’t wrap up a third consecutive title. In Top Alcohol and Pro Stock Bike things look like they may be all but mathematically wrapped up with Gary Phillips and Andrew Badcock looking comfortable ahead of John Cannuli and Phil Howard respectively, with the pair only needing to stage for qualifying to secure their titles. However, in Pro Bike especially a curveball could see the title turned on its head, with the wife of season standout Badcock expecting a child right around the time of the event. If Badcock does not stage for qualifying, it is possible that second-placed Phil Howard could pull off a coup if he can make the most of the opportunity. In Top Bike, racing will be for pride, with Queenslander Chris Matheson – racing in his debut pro season – wrapping up the title in Sydney ahead of Jay Upton with a win at Sydney Dragway. Willowbank Raceway Managing Director Steve Bettes said he couldn’t wait to see the championship picture unfold at the largest drag racing event outside of North America. “We are expecting over 500 racers to enter for the June 10-13 event, and with so many categories seeing their championships far from decided I am expecting some amazing racing and high emotions,” said Bettes. “These racers come from all across the country and all ranges of Australian drag racing, from ANDRA Pro Series brackets to Rocket All Stars Racing catgories including everything from Junior Dragsters to Supercharged Outlaws to Modified Bike to Super Street. “The Castrol EDGE Winternationals is always an event of high emotion given its position on the season calendar, and this year will be no different with so many brackets so close in the stakes. “Entry for children 13 years and under is free, and we will have roving entertainment and children’s rides in place making it a perfect family event. “There will be plenty to see and do in pit lane where spectators can get up close and personal with the teams as they prepare for racing, and no end of action on track.” The Thursday June 10 to Sunday June 13 event will host the championship ANDRA Pro Series final rounds for Top Fuel, Top Alcohol, Top Doorslammer, Pro Stock, Morgan & Wacker Top Bike and Morgan & Wacker Pro Stock Bike as well as final championship rounds for all of the sportsman brackets. My answer (as an ANDRA official who spends hours on end standing on the start line I am somewhat biased) is Pro Stock, followed by Super Street.
In Pro Stock qualifying for the Nitro Champs was the tight - positions 1-19 separated by only 0.436 of a second! No other motorsport in the world can boast that close a qualifying field. Come eliminations, every single pass was between 7.0 and 7.3 seconds. Pro Stock is without a doubt the closest form of motorsport in Australia. They don't catch fire or run speeds over 500km/h, but bloody hell they're great to watch.

![]() Theo's ON EDGE for the Castrol EDGE Winternationals It has been 9months since Theo Woollett's ON EDGE Nissan Skyline GTR has gone down the Willowbank quarter mile. This week-end's Castrol EDGE Winternationals will see the return of the gold GTR to Willowbank raceway some 33 kilograms lighter, a complete new drive train and a driver looking to rewrite the record books. Theo said "For the last couple of years I really have had my sights set on the world record which at the moment for one of these cars with radial tyres is 8.61. Back in January 2008 I ran my personal best 8.95 @ 160.43MPH but with limited budget, I found myself not running as hard as I would have like just to make sure I did not break any thing. So after the Jamboree last year I decided to park the car until I was in a position to have a red hot go at the World Record. We have removed the Nissan factory wiring harness that was about 42kilograms. We rewired the Motec system that was about 9 kilograms so we have a car that is 30 and bit kg's lighter. We have also installed a brand new Liberty Pro Stock Z Style 5-Speed Transmission. So fingers' crossed we will have great weather and we can deliver a World Record to my major and event sponsor Castrol EDGE". Theo will have his work cut out for him when qualifying for the ultra competitive Super Sedan bracket. It has attracted 73 entries this week-end and gets underway at 9am on Thursday.

Good run, so close to the record. When the air comes in later in the wekeend he'll be almost a sure thing.
though I'd be a tad worried that the chute didn't open. 158mph and no chute at Willowbank won't be fun.

![]() Greg Murphy wins V8 Supercar Challenge drag race at Castrol EDGE Winternationals ![]() Tuesday, 15 June 2010 - Posted by Brenton Edwards Castrol Racing’s Greg Murphy wins Supercar Challenge 2-1 at action-packed Castrol EDGE V8 Winternationals Four-time Bathurst winner, Holden’s Greg Murphy has taken out the V8 Supercar Challenge at the Castrol EDGE Winternationals, Australia’s biggest drag race, at Willowbank Raceway, near Brisbane. Murphy defeated Paul Morris Motorsport’s team-mate, Russell Ingall 2-1 in the best of three match race. Ingall had low elapsed time of the event with an 11.0 second run, while Murphy set the track V8 Supercar speed record at over 135 mph. “What a great experience, the Castrol EDGE V8 Supercar Challenge was a lot of fun!” Murphy said. “Russell and I split the wins in the first two races, so it was all on the line in the final. “I don''t think our reactions in the decider were anything to write about and my Castrol EDGE Commodore had a lot of wheel spin, but I was able to get the win light, which I''m pretty happy about - it also means I''ve got bragging rights in our team, at least until Darwin next weekend!” Never one to let a moment go by, Ingall was quick to suggest that allowing Murphy the win was the least he could do following his team-mate’s rough start to the V8 Supercar season. “Today was great fun, we were a bit worried about too much grip being the biggest issue as the track is so tacky – that is the first time you will hear about a v8 driver complaining about too much grip!” Ingall said. “We got off to a good start though and ‘Murph’ and I had a few close runs – since he has had not a great start to the year though I thought I would let him win it – just call me a nice guy,” added a laughing Ingall. “It was great to get out here today, the atmosphere and the crowd and the facility is just amazing and the racing from the guys here is just phenomenal – the times are so close and it is just intense – I got the chance to stand behind an 8000hp Top Fuel dragster and I can tell you, I don’t’ get scared too easy but that made me jump – those guys are certainly brave!” Murphy and Ingall return to the track in their Holden Commodore V8 Supercars later this week at the SKYCITY Triple Crown at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway for the seventh round of the 2010 V8 Supercar Championship Series.
