    Purchased VTi-R, Tacho Issues?

    Hi all!

I recently purchased my first car (2001 Honda Prelude VTi-R, Nighthawk Black. SO EXCIXTED!)

    BUT....

I got it for a really good price, the car is REAL CLEAN (not a mark on it), BUT the car seems to not like VTEC? It will choke at the time the second cam kicks in, thus not delivering the VTEC.

The tacho does not work as a result, just wondering what this could be and if the Tacho actually has anything to do with it?

The car is PERFECT besides this issue, it idles, drives beautifully, but won't let VTEC kick in.

I was told that there is a solenoid for the VTEC that bolts to the block that can sometimes get dirty? Is this true? If not could it be a Cam Sensor, Or Knock Sensor?

    PLEASE help me!

    Thank you!

You are correct, there is a VTEC solenoid on the side of the head that can get dirty and stop VTEC from engaging, this solenoid is known to outright fail too. If the cam sensor or knock sensor (or just about any other sensor) fails then it will generally throw a code. Does your check engine light ever come on?

The tacho itself is given signal directly from the ignition control module. If the ICM is faulty then that can cause a whole host of other issues too.

ok so ill look for that solenoid and clean it. where abouts is it located? i dont think theres a sensor issue as such, there are no faults on the dash. where is the ICM located too?

The ICM is inside the distributor. The VTEC solenoid is literally right next to it (the distributor).
