2014 Formula 1 Gran Premio De Espana Pirellia (Catalunya)

I'm cutting it a little fine with just an hour until FP1 gets underway but F1 is back after a 2 week break!

I was wondering what had gone wrong with the world but it all becomes clear, i was missing my F1 fix. Can anyone pull the Mercedes back?!

Catalunya this year sees somewhat of an interest off track with Red Bull complaining last race that Seb Vettel's pace (lack of it) is down to the chassis of is current car which may have a crack in it, though in the press conference they were playing it as a 'turn over every rock to find the problem' so may be no issue with the chassis itself. As such they are bringing their chassis from testing for him to try out in an effort to find out why he is off the pace. Here's hoping it makes diddly-squat difference and we can all see that Daniel is in fact faster than he is!

McLaren are bringing the first of an intensive upgrades program to attempt to reverse their fall down the standings. Ron Denis will not want a repeat of the form of last year after ousting Martin Whitmarsh from the role for those performances so the truth will be revealed here and over the next 5 races i think it is.

    Circuit details:

    Circuit: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

    Circuit length: 4.655 km

Number of corners: 16 (7 left, 9 right)

    2014 tyre compounds: Hard, Medium

Circuit lap record: 1m 21.670s - Kimi Raikkonen (2008), Ferrari

Weather Forcast is for clear weather across the weekend.

With respect to RBR. Just keen to see Daniel ahead of Vettel on points. A podium would be nice.

Until the mercs actually get beaten, happy to settle for Hammy ftw.

    Vamos a la carrera!

I have to agree Bob, I don't think anyone can compete with the mercs at this stage.

Funny that RBR are trying to blame the chassis for Vettel's failings. What's the saying? A good mechanic never blames his tools? I heard it said once that since Ricciardo is fresh from running with Toro Rosso who were using less downforce last year than the main cars, and that new regs this year call for less downforce overall, that he is used to running without it. So Ricciardo's style is better suited to the new cars setup than Vettel's. Could be bullshit though. I wouldn't be surprised if RBR spent the last 2 weeks changing the setup of the two cars and swap the drivers over though.

I think Mercedes will have the advantage for at least half the season, maybe around Germany/ Hungary the others may be closing up on them a bit more. At the moment they are really so far ahead i can't see it being closed down within 1-2 races.

Vettel being overtaken by Kobayashi last race was a highlight for me, like bob as long as Daniel stays ahead of him i'm thrilled and even more so if he keeps throwing tantrums and showing the world he is just a child and he won his world championships on a combination of poor driving from Webber especially starts, whatever the issue was where Webber's car always had issues and, most importantly, team orders. I know they are legal now but i still like to see two drivers race a' la McLaren in Turkey in 2011 i think it was.

FP1 underway now, update when it concludes.

Qalifying results! It was quite an interesting session with 2 red flags.

Firstly in Q1 Maldonado showed why he's paid the big bucks and dropped a wheel onto the astro-turf on the outside of turn 3 and ended up in a concrete wall with major front right damage and wheel hanging off so he will start from the back of the grid.

In Q1 Rosberg held sway with Hamilton seeming to struggle to match his pace, the final few minutes were a bit of a flurry as a few teams threw mediums at the track to ensure they didn't drop out. Alonso bravely didn't and as such saved himself a fresh set of mediums.

Q2 was similar with Hamilton again unable to match Rosberg's pace, one of his radio communications was "i don't know how, but we've made the car worse" i'm guessing since FP1 and 2. No big drop outs except for Magnussen who had a power unit failure and couldn't complete the session.

Q3 and the tables turned with Vettel struggling to leave the pit lane unable to find a gear, when he finally did it only got him as far as the first corner before his gearbox decided it wanted a lie down. This caused red flags again while they recovered the car so he will start 10th. Hamilton came out a different man and seemed to have Rosberg covered, improving when Rosberg upped his pace and controlled it to take pole. Special mention to Grosjean who took 5th in a car that looked about as settled as a ADHD kid after free run of Wonka's chocolate factory. Also to Kimi who seemed to struggle early but ended up out qualifying Alonso.

Penalties highlighted in list are not accounted for and need to be applied for actual gird.

    Results:

    1. Lewis Hamilton
    2. Nico Rosberg
    3. Daniel Ricciardo
    4. Valtteri Bottas
    5. Romain Grosjean
    6. Kimi Räikkönen
    7. Fernando Alonso
    8. Jenson Button
    9. Felipe Massa
    10. Sebastian Vettel*
    11. Nico Hulkenberg

    14. Esteban Gutierrez
    15. Kevin Magnussen
    16. Jean-Eric Vergne**

    18. Max Chilton

Good race actually with some strategy coming into play and Hamilton not being completely settled mid way through allowing Rosberg to close in on him. Happy for Alonso to finish ahead of Kimi in Spain.

    two weeks until Monaco

Interesting to see the lap time stats.
Drive of the day still goes to Seb I think. consecutive fastest laps of the race and each time he came in for tyres, was making significant improvements. Some real season potential starting to show there.
