In the US you can pay the DMV and some other private services to give away somebody's personal information (name, address, car history) based solely on having their rego plate. People are paranoid and don't want their cars or identities stoles so they scrub the plate when posting online. There's a bunch of examples in the US of people being stalked and even murdered stemming from information obtained through this method. I don't think we have the same sort of system here, you can use the rego plate to get the status of the registration and the engine number for free but I think that's about it. It's just the done thing nowdays, I don't thing anybody really thinks too much about it, it's just better to be safe than sorry. Hell, I posted my VIN online and I don't care, it's not exactly useful information to have especially as it is a grey import so the VIN is absolutely meaningless.

I guess I'm not surprised for the US; e.g. I know that they have something called a Reverse Phone Book - where if you have someone's number you can look up their address!

Thanks Curtis - that's why I asked the question - I scored a really cool custom plate here in Vic - I was really surprised that no-one had taken it already - but I'm not about to post it if it is a privacy risk. I like my privacy - a lot!

Mind you - if you think about it - you drive around with it on - what's to stop anyone taking the plate no. and doing the same research??

Privacy I guess, and you can get a lot of information just from number plates if you have access to the right sources
