Cool conors bwaaaaaWHOOOOOSH CHSHHH (turbo) build thred

so after spending time collecting parts and getting things organised i finaly started my build tonight. i puled out the altinator, ps pump, manifold, and some other bits out to try and figure out were exaclty the turbo will fit and were all the pipes and stuff will go. my plan for tomoro is make a wooden bracket to hold the turbo were i want it and then build the manifold up to the wooden bracket so its in the right spot. im useing a G-28 (i think. its a stock silvia turbo) and im planing to use the stock 7-8 psi waist gate. but anyway. here are some random pics form today.

Hers a tip, install your head flange, then have a friend hold the turbo with flange attached where you would like it to sit, then weld steel bar between the flanges.

That's the only reliable way to make a template.

cool, yet another turbo 3g, there is getting to be quite a few of us now.

FYI, all sylvias are t25 (some were classed as T28, but garrett changed calssifications and they became t25 due to the small turbine wheel)

seriously, what adrenalin said is the go, 4 little tacks, you wont melt anything or set anything on fire. you can then remove the whole thing and weld it up on a bench. Having a spare motor to mock it up on will help too.
And just be careful on alternator clearance where you have the turbo in that pic. Mine is way to the left of that and my dump pipe still only has minimal clearance to the back of the alternator.

ok. coz i had people calling it boath so i wasn't shure. the other thing is are there any realy good detailed pics of another 3rd gen with the same turbo. coz im finding it hard to comprehend how to get the air and exaust to and form it because of the orientation of the inlets and outlets. like if you point the air inlet the right way the exaust points up and yea. there was one other i found but it had a smaller radiator and i want to try keep the stock one

You'll also need to rotate the turbo 90 deg from in that pic due to the oil drain line. Either that or index the center in the housings.
There's plenty of room, but at the end of the day there will be a compromise somewhere.
If you are prepared to loose the a/c you will make life easier too, but some have managed to keep it.

you can clock the housings a little, but if you check out my current setup, you'll see that my ins and out point the same directions as those on your turbo.

ok thanks. i think the angle you have your turbo helps coz now the bend form the outlet isent as sharp. and im defs going to keep the AC. but i think i might have to get an aftermarket front bar to fit the IC :/ and PJF_lude i think coz you maid a new progress thread the link in your sig dosent work now and bob so the the big pipe needs to be pointing down. see i think some of the biggest problems im gona have is gona be baceik knowledge. like i know how it all works ish and i have done my research on how they go in our cars and what i need and i get all that. but when people make poast and do rightups they gess you already know the baceick stuff. thats why when i was playing with the turbo i had to think twice about which hole the air came out of like i know i sound imcompatent but i do get what im doing. i think its just coz 100% of the stuff i know is off the internet i never picked up the realy baceick stuff you would normaly get from a friend or relative that's into cars and that. i gess its kinda like someone knowing that water is maid up of hydrogen and stuff and knowing density and conductivity but then not knowing that its wet. and yea. if you get what i mean. ANYWAY. so the little pipe needs to point down, and i can just unbolt it and spin it round?

The rubbish you're talking about is called "spatter". If you insist on using MIG to do this, you need to go buy yourself some fire blankets - sometimes aldi has em cheap.
Tape them around the enginebay so only the area you're welding is able to get spatter on it.

I really recommend you have the manifold TIG welded however.

Another boosted 3g, think I need to hurry up and decide on N/A or turbo.. Dammit!

Knowing me I'll just cop out and buy a boosted 3g and swap everything over LOL
