    Help

    Have 1991 si4ws much loved.
Started blowing big cloud white smoke on starting. Goes after bout 5 minutes. Put foot hard on fuel pedal spits water out of exhaust. Oil is normal, coolant still normal, no change in Temp. Still idles normal and drives normal. Compression test all cylinders same at 160. 2 weeks ago used gernie under car to clean dirt from road works (not sure if that did anything). Also starts normal but if go for drive stop and turn off wont start, but wait 2 minutes then starts normal again. Car has been well cared for had since new.

    Won't start

    3 things to check:

    Fuel
    Spark
    compression

With these 3 things you'll get a nice explosion.

When it's not starting, check these, try manually priming the fuel line by adding fuel into it (the tube before the fuel rail).

Is it turning over or just not taking up?

Is the engine turning over when it won't start, or is there nothing at all?

Thanks mate, yes the engine is turning over.

Do you have any idea on the the white smoke I wrote about.

Could be condensation which is all good, perfectly fine. But it may also be cracked head gasket, letting coolant into the cylinders. If it was cracked gasket though you would notice alot of smoke, lack of power, bubbling or froffing in the radiator

Thanks Kozman, it has really got me baffled seems to be to much smoke for condensation. No issues with radiator. Coolant at normal level no change. Compression test done all cyclinders 160. Car drives normal. No change to oil. checked under spark plugs all normal. is there any way excess water could be in the exhuast system 2 weeks ago I used agernie to clean under it to get dirt off.

Unless you sprayed directly into the exhaust, there shouldn't be anything but condensation. My car blows smoke in the mornings, but its still frosty down in Melbourne right now.
Think you might be ok, but with the stopping and starting issues, No idea, perhaps check to see if your main relay is playing up, its a fairly common problem, and usually happens after driving around for a bit
Theres a few write-ups on a main relay fix, easiest thing to do is just swap it over with a known working relay

Take it for a good long drive and see if the symptoms persist.
The lack of starting could be a main relay thing and unrelated to the white smoke.
