So I started my car then BANG!!

Title says it all started my car then I heard a rather loud BANG that shuddered my car. Turned it off checked
my engine mounts, they're fine, no signs of fluid leakage started the car again, no noise, revved it, no noise. Then I drove it and it drove fine wast down on power nothing unusual at all.

I have my own theory but I'd like to hear other peoples thoughts before I distract them with my own.

    Thanks guy,
    - Mitch

could it have been something from the environment at all that maybe sounded like it was from your car?

i know a guy who was driving along and heard a funny noise coming from his car, so he slowed down a bit then sped up again and the sound changed depending on his speed... then a harley davidson overtook him and the noise was no longer there

My theory is a bolt on the starter motor, I'm thinking it's cracked a bolt. It feels like it's taking a few extra turns to start it, it may just be in my head though...

I blew my timing belt in my last car, suffice it to say I made a rather large sound but I didn't start the car after that to avoid damage.

Well the car was running after the bang so it deffinetey wasn't the timing belt, ha ha.

Could be something mechanical, like your bolt therory, engine mount, exhaust bracket etc IE; something snapped, but settled back in place after breaking, could explain the "shudder" throught the car. Also could be fuel related, depending on when the bang occurred in the cranking sequence. Is it possible that you got a little extra fuel loading before ignition, this would be a less violet shudder ,but possibly quite startling (Loud) if you are not expecting it.

    Thought i'd add something.

I went to adjust my valves/tappets around 2 years ago at Hannys (Honda specialist in Smithfield Sydney). Mechanics reinstalled the valve cover etc and turned the key. I heard a pop noise. It wasn't too too loud followed by a weird smell. The engine popped but didn't run. Right after the pop was a slight hissing noise which I assume was the intake or could have been the belts just spinning down, I dunno.

They turned the key a few seconds later and the engine started fine.

When I get the chance, I'll check the starter motor today give the exhaust a rattle (however I'd assume that an exhaust bracket would continue to vibrate and shit me to tears)

You should be checking your oil level at least every week or two...
