Honda CEO "New NSX MUST be faster than GT-R"

Orders from Honda's CEO to Honda R & D, "make the new NSX faster around the Nordschleife than the Nissan GT-R".

NÜRBURG, Germany — The latest prototype of the 2011 Acura NSX has hit the Nürburgring, and according to our sources in Japan, it has a very specific goal. We're told that Takeo ***ui, CEO of Honda, has tasked his R&D team with building an NSX that's faster around the Nürburgring than both the Nissan GT-R and the upcoming Lexus LF-A.

It's a tall order, and one that Honda hopes it can achieve through the use of a 5.5-liter V10 expected to make 550 horses, with a torque peak expected to top 420 pound-feet. The engine is essentially a slightly larger version of the V8 that Honda will use for the next-generation, rear-wheel-drive RL sedan, and it will use cylinder deactivation under light loads for maximum efficiency. Additional gains will come from the use of an eight-speed, paddle-shifted automatic.

Getting the power to the ground will be a modified version of Honda's Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) system. Packaging could be tight, however, as this NSX will place its V10 up front. A combination of steel and aluminum will be used for the chassis that will form the basis of this 2+2 sports car.

What this means to you: The Acura NSX is less than two years away, and it's aiming to reclaim its title as Japan's ultimate supercar. — Ed Hellwig, Lead Senior Editor

    ohhh shit yeah!!!

How realistic is the goal of beig quicer than the GTR?

this is rather exciting! Cant wait. I rekon honda can do it! Wonder if it will have a VTEC engine? THeres no mention of that! and please dont let robert see this, if he sees the SH in SH-AWD he will go nuts.

I dont think this is a battle of who has the bigger engine. It will come down to the ability to handle and get the power to the ground. They have their work cut out for them. The GTR really is that good .

That sounds great if they get it to work well but i have my doubts about a front engine v10 and a 2+2 chassis. The thing will have to be bloody enormous. A dodge viper has a v10 in the front and it's practically all front!

bet this is gonna be like the other nsx when they went over board with the weight reduction putting mesh for the shift boot just to save a few grams... i agree with bob they gonna have a hard time beating the GTR even with a v10 motor... this is what happens when honda sticks to NA, but its a good thing as they aint just taking the short cut and slapping on 2 turboes.

the difference with this NSX hopefully is that there are distinct goals for this car to acheive, and perhaps thats what will form this one to be more productive than the last.

Even though the previous NSX was a technological marvel, it fell short over the years with the same formula. This time around they have a milestone they need to reach. And they must have done a tonne of R&D already and they must believe they can out do the GTR because a CEO will not just come out and say something like that without any basis. It will hurt the company's reputation and value (stockholder expectations and whatnot)

So i think honda can do it, already know how to do it and they will do it now to save up the $200,000AU that this thing will probabky cost.

Haha i reckon its the other way around! Designing a twin turbocharged engine to meet emissions/economy/power requirements would be harder than just upping the displacement IMO!

make it faster? short answer: make it weigh less than the skyline and get its power to the ground more efficiently. long answer, well that's left to the engineers.

i hope honda can do it.

corvette and ferrari 599 are hot on the heels of the gtr. given the screamer v10, 4wd, 8 speed gear box, a lot of electrickery and some good aero, there is no reason for it not to succeed.

Honda has made turbocharged cars before so it's not like they refuse to make them, they just suck at it.
