    EG.... carparks = neutral
Parking on the kerb = first or reverse depending on hill mebbe even neutral if its level
Same. fintelboss I really get confused by your post, I dont think an engine can start back to front? It makes my head hurt.

i use blocks under all 4 wheels just incase aswell as leaving it in 15th xD

first always, as said by euroz wheels go either way if the clutch is in, but won't move when its in gear without the accelerator.

    ill try to simplfy,

if the hand brake is off, and the car is in 1st gear, and you push the car, the engine turns over in the same direction it would if it was running and you were just driving normaly, however, you need to push very hard. it is because you have to push so hard to move the car that people leave the car in gear when parked, so if the hand brake fails the car wont roll away.

now if you park on an uphill steep slope, in first, and the handbrake fails, the car will try to roll backwards, trying to make the engine turn over running in the opposite direction it was built to.

now, i dont know for sure if this is bad for then engine or not, but i suggest it is, so recommend, contrary to other people,
car pointing down hill = first,
car pointing up hill = reverse.

it may well be that there is nothing wrong with an engine turning over backwards, in which case the gear with the highest ratio is the way to, and that is normally first.

always nuetral, turn the wheel in so i go into the kerb, to lazy to put into a gear, this mechanic i sometimes go to puts it in first and when i start up i always almost end up hittin the wall in front lol.

Yeah my mum left my car in first in my completely flat garage, and I have to park less than 10cm away form the wall to be able to open my door due to steel work bench on the side... kicked it over standing out of the car and almost shat myself, it *touched* the wall

And fintelboss, that one just doesnt work for me. Seems to me more the end just wouldnt turn over, effectively stopping the car from rolling (though agreed it would put stress on it, but meh i'd rather than than rolling away)

i have to agree with knickers at this stage. how the hell does the engine start 'turning over', dont you need ignition for that?

I'm only saying I don't think it can turnover backwards, however yeah if the ignition isn't on then then nothing is going to spark..

nope, it just like a roll start. like i said its hard to do, but i think its bad for the engine to be stressed backwards. (ie when in first and parked facing up hill) i also said ive never rebuilt a car engine, so im not sure, maybe bob can settle this? it may be well be fine! and its probably better to wreak the engine then have your car roll backwards down a big hill and get written off anyway

You have to have the ignition on to push start a car man, also I think theres more chance of the car sliding down a hill steep enough to move the engine from 0 when the car is in gear?

when i say rotate the engine backwards, i dont mean it actually starting by itself, obviously you cant do that... all i mean is having it turn over with carmshafts etc rotating the wrong way once or twice, or simply trying to and putting a stress on all the components that it was never designed for.

Sadly I like you don't know enough about the pure mechanics of it, so I don't know if that could possibly happen

AHA! yes, because car engines are a lot more complicated than outboard motors

    I do the same

Why do some of you leave your car in neutral, doesn't it put more pressure on the hand brake?
