rofl i drive a vw beetle, its been living for around 39 years! im pretty sure all thats bad can happen to it already has happend and its still running perfect!

    i <3 my beetle

i use my method all the time, even when one of the handbreak cables snapped (it has 2, one for each side) the only way to stop it from moving was for it to be in gear, it didnt move an inch.

It wont turn over unless your on a pretty fkn steep incline. I have had the handbrake fail on our work ute (It had near 2 tons on the tray) and 1st gear stopped it dead.

I usually leave it in neutral because i never have to park on a slope. If i do park on a steep slope i put it into whichever gear is appropriate (first uphill, rev downhill.

EDIT: ^^ lol if you can push a car with its handbrake on your a fkn tank.

it wouldnt matter whether you had 1st or reverse because the front wheels spin freely in opposite directions when the cars in gear. so if you turned the front left wheel forwards the front right wheel will spin backwards.

One of my mates does the weirdest thing. He stops, puts it in neutral (even if in first), turns the car off and then puts it in first. Bizarre.

    I do that LOL

I only do it so that I don't forget hahaha and that it's in gear before I leave the car.

If both wheels want to turn in the same direction it drives the engine though amirite?

i have arguements with the girlfriend about this all the time.
she never....NEVER....leaves her car in gear...always in neutral.

i have tried the "what if the handbrake fails" logic on her but it doesnt sink in and she doesnt do it.
    so i changed approach.
"you can do what you want in your car...its only a mazda 323...but if you drive my car park it in 1st. no excuses."
    so she does.

just gotta work on getting her to put the seat back farward those 4 notches so i can reach the pedels after.
A completed modified car is an ever changing goal that can never truly be achieved.
CLICK to see my progress towards this impossible end.

I got into the habit of putting it in reverse because whenver i parked (driveway or carpark etc) id always have to reverse? so it was easier lol

When I first started driving manual I always left it in neutral. Now it's habit to leave it in first for the added safety.
