depends. If the car is on a downhill slope, reverse - if it's on an uphill slope, 1st. Dunno just in case the handbrake decides to fail there's a backup But also sometimes just leave in neutral.

I park the car in P because it won't let me remove the key otherwise, which I disagree with, I'd much rather park it in N

I'll always leave it in first, just out of habit.... but on a hill i make sure that the weight of the car is supported by the handbrake, not the gearbox... leaving it in gear is just a back-up

same. first on a slope ro anywhere for that matter, neutral on a flat car park only... and not even then sometimes

and on a hill i also like to turn one of the wheels full lock to one side, so should i forget to put it in 1st, and the handbrake should give, it'll just quietly roll a few cm and hit the gutter and stop.

Always whack her in first wherever i am, part from work, because through out the day of servicing cars etc, someone will forget its in gear and bunny hop into a wall or something lol.

ALWAYS bar none, 1st gear. I live on a hill and the people who live across the road, thier car rolled down the hill one day and into the brick fence of the house down the bottom (admittedly their 8 year old child released the handbrake) but just to be on the safe side i always keep it in 1st.

does anybody ever leave the car in reverse? or I am just odd what if the car is on a badass downhill slope (the car facing DOWN the hill)?

you only leave it in reverse when, if the hand brake was to fail, the car needs to be stopped from rolling backwards.

this is because if it was left in first, and started rolling backwards, the engine could turn over running backwards, which it was never designed to do.

    does that make sence?

basicaly if the car is pointing down hill, put it in first, while if its pointing up hill, put it in reverse.

just depends how the car is sitting.
1st gear most the time, reverse on the odd occasion im on an incline,
which i just notice is opisite to fintelboss..
i thought you have it in first on an uphill, so ifthe handbrake fails, its held in place by the gear.
same chop but n reverse too..?
very rarely leave it in neuttral, just in case someone tries to move the car or something, the handbrake can be undone from outside a car..

PM me for all your car audio and other miscellaneous installation needs.

the gear ratio for 1st and reverse are nearly the same for most cars, so both have the same effect of braking the car (because the engine doesnt want to turn over)

but if the engine does turn over, i dont think you want to have it running backwards, even if its just 1 time. -just what i was told-

ive never rebuilt an engine, so im really not sure, does anybody know what happens when our engines are rotated backwards? are there any issues with the cam belt and valves etc?
