on a positive note, after driving 500 km on the highway, and 200 km regular in the city, it took me just 50.5 l to fill up to the brim. thats just 7.3 l/100km! yay! still cost $80 though...

They will make the ACCC look into it and the ACCC will piss fart around, make a few threats against coles and do nothing, that's what always happens.

I have this feeling Rudd is gonna do something stupid like inject money into the fuel industry, or even lower tax on fuel, which will be a short term solution, but will mess it up in the long term. =/

The problem with the fuel tax is it's a percentage, not a fixed number. The federal coffers get about 46% of that $1.60/litre that you pay for petrol. So if you pay $1.00 per litre, the government gets $0.46, but if the cost goes up to $1.60 then the government gets $0.74...and the 10% GST on top of that!

So the government has a vested interest in keeping the price of fuel as high as possible.

Now for something slightly related...why is the price of diesel so high? Diesel is a fuel that isn't anywhere near as highly refined as petrol (much of it is a byproduct of making petrol I believe) and everywhere else in the world it's cheaper, so why the hell id diesel average 20cpl higher the ulp?

wow good informative numbers Col, i didnt realise the government made that much money off of fuel!!! they could definately afford to drop it back a few percentage points then, or remove the GST from petrol or something...

my understanding is; during the time the infrastructure ie roads etc were being build, a tax was introduced on fuel to fund that.

however now days it is contracted out a lot of the time, and even then there is sooo much other revenue rasing thats going on in the form of massive fines on traffic offences that the government should be able to finance the small amount of road projects they undertake with that collected revenue.

therefore, how can they justify the huge fuel taxes?

You're right, the levy (it's not a tax apparantly) was introduced to fix roads/infrastructure.

But if that's the case, our roads should be f**king perfect!
