Yeah I've seen both of those links. Nothing to report on updates except Ian and I had a great tuning session on the street the other day sorting out a few things like fuel economy and some slight pinging and hiccups.
It pulls really hard now. I'll update when I get it on a dyno for some fine tuning and upping the boost pressures.

So tuning with Ian on the weekend just past, and the alternator decided to give up - just for something different.

is it due to over heating of the alt?
read that its quiet the issue, and the some of the solutions were a alternator upgrade, some weld on cooling fins. some guy solved his issue by checking the grounds something about his powder coated bracket was sufficient and an underdrive pully was the go. food for thought to keep you pondering

    hope it works out mate

Speechless... this cannot be just bad luck. What is this, number 6? Any idea what keeps killing them? (apart from heat, which i know you've investigated...)

So weird, still running original alternator on mine. 255xxxkm on it.

No heat shielding, had power steering fluid pooed over it a couple of times.

    I don't get it....

I honestly don't know what it could be. This time when I pulled up and popped the hood it had smoke from the voltage regulator area of the alternator (closest to the dump pipe).
The ACL heat shielding is all still there, I really don't know what killed it.

The current alternator is off a Mitsubishi or something and is a different shape to the prelude one which gave it more room between the manifold / dump and the alternator.
I thought I was all good after getting one that was spaced further away. I'm lost as to if its an electrical fault or if its still a heat related issue.

The car drives pretty good apart from this and it pulls really hard. There is plenty of under-hood heat but in saying that, it's not different to any other turbo setup here.
Is it possible that Ian and I both have a similar electrical fault that's causing the problem? who knows?

Either that or we're both suffering from the heat killing the alternator.

It's very odd! My engine runs massively hot with the turbo and I've yet to lose an alternator (touch wood). But you guys go through them like loose change!

My manifold is ceramic coated and wrapped but still sees temps of around 250 deg C around the alternator. Mine had a rectifier issue on delivery which was sorted pretty quick. It's still running fine and done around 10,000kms so far.

No real idea why you guys are having continual issues. I gather the alternators are coming from different sources, and not a manufacture / supplier thing.

i replaced my alternator last night, new one is a denso, old one is the same one you have Bob (i think).

But i'm not entirely sure the old one is dead, it was an intermittent issue, and i did find one of the rectifier earthing nuts loose, which could cause an issue.

I'm concerned as to why I saw smoke coming from the alternator... I'm pretty sure that's not a healthy thing.
The wiring seems ok around the alternator (haven't removed it yet).

I'm seriously considering relocating the voltage regulator and other components to another area in the engine bay away from heat.
Then it would just be a wound copper coil and some magnets sitting next to the heat.

With yours Steve there could actually be a bit of a dead air flow zone in that area. One idea might be to run some subtle ducting or a scoop from under the front bar up and direct it towards the alternator.
If you have a K type thermocouple on a multimeter you could rig it up so that while driving you could check the local temps.
Or use something like a thermal change paint. http://www.thermalpaint.com/products_singlechange.html

So the alternator is in at Rapid Rewinds at Rocklea and they're taking a look at it for me. He's going to give me a few options on relocating the voltage regulator and some of the other bits in the guts of it.
We're also looking into doing a rewind on it to make it a higher output.

In other news: Last night I got home to find the number plate had been stolen from the front of my car. If anyone sees 426GWA on a car anywhere, let the cops know.

    That's all for now.
